Next up today as I whizz through posting all the modes Melodic Minor is the LYDIAN DOMINANT scale.
It is also known as LYDIAN b7 (Lydian Flat 7). and according to wikipedia it's also known as the Acoustic Scale or the Overtone Scale.
All very interesting but not names I'd ever encountered in my blinkered guitarist world before googling for some back story to pad this out a bit. I might do that more often and see what else I can learn...
LYDIAN DOMINANT or what ever you choose to call it is the 4th mode of Melodic Minor and it is made up of the intervals, 1,2,3,#4,5,6,b7.
Have fun!

The next lucky scale after a very busy lunch time at work with my laptop is LYDIAN AUGMENTED
LYDIAN AUGMENTED is the 3rd mode of Melodic Minor.
It is made up of the intervals, 1,2,3,#4,#5,6,7.

ANOTHER EIGHTBALL VOODOO TUNE
Another EIGHTBALL VOODOO tune finished, this time it's, "THE DEVIL'S COUNTRY."
It's a reworking of the riffs from a PUREDECAY song I wrote ages ago. I never really did anything with it, so I was really happy for the riffs to have a chance to get used again.
Jay added his own lyrics and off we went.
There's a few more tunes coming from EIGHTBALL VOODOO over the next few weeks, so it's pretty exciting times!
Time to stop waffling on here and go and record something.

DOMINANT PHRYGIAN
Dominant Phrygian, or Spanish Phrygian as it is sometimes called
(just noodle up and down the first postion and you will hear why!) is
the 5th mode of Harmonic Minor.
It is made of the intervals: 1,b2,3,4,5,b6,b7.
It has a very distinctive Spanish or Arab influenced sound. Once you get even slightly familiar with this scale you'll be noodling along with the Gypsy Kings before you know it.
As usual, the free guitar scale diagrams laid out below give you the scale mapped out over the entire neck, as a 4 note per string 3 octave scale and as 7, 3note per string positions.

The HINDU SCALE
I've gone through all the Greek Modes already, and Harmonic and Melodic, so now I'm going to start on the modes of melodic and harmonic minor.
First up is the HINDU SCALE, made from the intervals 1,2,3,4,5,b6,b7.
The Hindu scale is the 5th mode of Melodic Minor.
It's a beautiful mix of major and minor elements giving a cool eerie, mysterious and slightly eastern feel I guess. All I can say is goof around with it yourself.
I do have a musical example for this one, nothing recorded recently, but this is a maybe 10 year old demo for a PORNOVURT song that never got played live more than two or three times.
Any how, the solo that start about 2/3 of the way through has a little Hindu section, well 2 Hindu sections. It starts out in E, there's some bends then the Hindu bit should stand out, then it switches to A minor for a bit, then goes back to the section in E and repeats it with a few variations.
OK, dot time!

New EIGHTBALL VOODOO TUNE
I just got a link to the demo version of a new EIGHTBALL VOODOO track called "666 Reasons."
I had a lot of fun recording the solos for this one, and it was the first time I had recorded anything with my Roxane FR, (Floydrose equipped Roxane) so I did get a little heavy handed with the whammy bar, but I think it all worked out ok in the end! :-)
You should be able to check out by clicking below if the widget is working:
If it's not showing check out the bands Revebnation page HERE
Three octave mode patterns
This was all laid out already in the sheets for the individual modes, but if you already know the seven three note per string patterns and were just looking to learn some of the longer patterns, I thought it would be handy to have all the three octave shapes in one place.
There is a lesson on modes coming soon, to put all the dots and numbers into some sort of context you all, but for now....
HERE'S SOME MORE DOTS!

THE LOCRIAN MODE
This post completes the list of all the "Greek Modes."
If you have a look at the index of all free stuff on my blog HERE you will find handy diagrams for all the modes, Ionian (Major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian (Minor) and now Locrian.
Locrian is spelled with the intervals: 1,b2,b3,4,b5,b6,b7, so it sounds dark eerie and unsettled. The b5 or "Diabolus in musica." the, Devil in Music as the dissonant tritone between the root and the flat 5th was known historically especially adds to the unease of the mode and it's over all dark sound.
But before that, here's 2 minutes or so of me playing widdly guitar solos!

Mixolydian Mode
That's right, there's a Stargate in Stratford...
Last post for the night, it's Mixolydian time.
The Mixolydian Scale is spelt with the intervals: 1,2,3,4,5,6,b7.
So the same as the Major scale with a b7.
So get ready for some happy summery modal fun-times!

The Lydian Mode
I'm half way through our little journey through the greek modes.
Today's lucky set of lines dots and numbers is The Lydian Mode.
Spelt with the intervals: 1,2,3#4,5,6,7.
Essentially the Major Scale/Ionian Mode but with the fourth note raised a semi-tone to a #4 from a perfect or natural 4.
It's the the #4 that gives the mode its distinctive sound. it is Steve Vai's favourite mode, and the mode that John Gomm uses in "Passion Flower" during the widdly solo bits.
OK, I'll shut up now and make with the dots...

The Phrygian Mode
OK...
The next exciting set of lines, dots and numbers on our little tour of the harmonic and melodic options on the guitar neck is the PHRYGIAN MODE.
It is the third mode of the Major Scale and is made up of the intervals: 1,b2,b3,4,5,b6,b7.
It has a distinctive eerie, mysterious sound. It's probably the easiest of the modes to recognise, of at least wrestles with Lydian for the honour.
There are loads of examples I can think of to illustrate this, but since I don't own the rights to any off those, here's me playing with an old band PISTOL KIXX. \This tune, "Shit's going down" uses Phrygian and Minor Pentatonic in the solo. (The solo kicks in at about 4 minutes 20 seconds if you can't sit through all the drunken shambling!)
OK, enough self indulgent "Musical examples,"
...on with the dots!

The Melodic Minor Scale
Next up in the exciting tour of guitar scales is the Melodic Minor Scale.
It's spelt with the intervals: 1,2,b3,4,5,6,7, so depending on how you want to look at it, it's the same as the Major Scales but with a b3, or if you prefer the same as the Natural Minor Scale but with a (major) 6 and 7.
I do vaguely remember there being some mention of the melodic minor scale strictly speaking being different in it's ascending and descending forms (Natural minor when descending I think?)* but in it's application particularly by lazy guitarists, these boxes below will do just fine.
Melodic Minor does have some lovely modes, that I will waffle about later, including my favourite scale, The Hindu Scale, made famous by Jimmy Page, but the Hindu Scale sheet will follow... eventually.
(*That sounded a bit mental when I read it back, so I checked. In classical composition the scale does have different ascending and descending forms, 1,2,b3,4,5,6,7 going up, 1,2,b3,4,5,b6,b7 going down, but in modern applications applications, in particular jazz, the descending version is omitted. If you don't believe me ask wikipedia!)

The Harmonic Minor Scale
The new "make guitar diagrams" software is still making me smile and I'm churning out guitar study aids faster than I can think of things to say about them.
In other news, I'm working on an acoustic sort of ballad for the mighty EIGHTBALL VOODOO , should be fun hearing Jays filthy snarl on something a bit less full on than the last couple of tracks we recorded.
Anyhow, it's time for some more dots, squares and numbers...
This time telling you where your fingers go if you want to play the HARMONIC MINOR SCALE. Famed from classical music of old and neo-classical widdlers like Yngwie Malmsteen, so if you want to get your neoclassical shred on, then check this out!
The scales is spelt with the following intervals: 1,2,b3,4,5,b6,7. It's the gap of a minor third between the b6 and 7 that gives the scale it's distinctive sound.
Anyhow, enough waffle, bring on the dots!

The Dorian mode.
RIP "Machete."
Never before had a cat endured being made to wear so many hats, hastily constructed by drunk people with such good humour...
So, Dorian mode time.
The Dorian mode is made of the the intervals, 1,2,b3,4,5,6,b7.
Of all the Greek Modes, I once read that Spartan soldiers were only allowed to listen to music composed in Dorian, because the other modes were not stern and manly enough, or words to that effect. I should probably check if that was true, but hey!
The Diagrams below lay out the scale all over the neck, as a four note per string three octave scale and as the seven three note per string shapes that will let you play it all over the neck.
