HARMONIC MINOR (And its Modes)

This is just a quick summary post for all resources relating to HARMONIC MINOR (And its Modes).

HARMONIC MINOR

THE HARMONIC MINOR SCALE: All 7 positions and as 3 octave scale.

LOCRIAN NATURAL 6- The 2nd mode of Harmonic Minor. 

IONIAN #5- The 3rd mode of Harmonic Minor. 

DORIAN #4- The 4th mode of Harmonic Minor.

DOMINANT PHRYGIAN- The 5th mode of Harmonic Minor. 

LYDIAN #2- The 6th mode of Harmonic Minor. 

ATERED bb7- The 7th mode of Harmonic Minor.

DOMINANT PHRYGIAN

Dominant Phrygian, or Spanish Phrygian as it is sometimes called (just noodle up and down the first postion and you will hear why!) is the 5th mode of Harmonic Minor.

It is made of the intervals: 1,b2,3,4,5,b6,b7.

It has a very distinctive Spanish or Arab influenced sound. Once you get even slightly familiar with this scale you'll be noodling along with the Gypsy Kings before you know it.

As usual, the free guitar scale diagrams laid out below give you the scale mapped out over the entire neck, as a 4 note per string 3 octave scale and as 7, 3note per string positions.

Harmonic and Melodic Minor Scales, A couple of short summary sheets

Not a lot to report, but while I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting to audition some more singers for THE SOHO COBRAS I thought I would pop up some more guitar stuff.


These are some quick revision sheets for The Harmonic and Melodic Minor Scales.
